Because the opportunities for surface water delivery in the eastern portion of the Turlock Subbasin are currently limited, ETSGSA’s groundwater sustainability strategy focuses first on demand reduction, including a multibenefit land repurposing program (MLRP) that is currently in development under an $8.89 million grant from the California Department of Conservation. The MLRP is a voluntary demand reduction program with a goal to eventually repurpose 21,000 acres by incentivizing landowners to repurpose portions of their irrigated acreage to new high value, non-irrigated uses that provide other benefits such as on-farm runoff retention and recharge, habitat, flood control and community benefits. The story map below introduces the program and provides interactive maps that landowners can use to explore possible repurposing strategies throughout ETSGSA.
